BeppoSAX OBSERVATIONS OF THE BLACK HOLE CANDIDATES

چکیده

We describe BeppoSAX observations of the black hole candidates LMC X–1 and LMC X–3 performed in Oct. 1997. Both sources can be modelled by a multicolor accretion disk spectrum, with temperature ∼ 1 keV. However, there is some evidence that a thin emitting component coexists with the thick disk at these temperatures. In the direction of LMC X–1, we detected a significant emission above 10 keV, which we suspect originates from the nearby source PSR 0540-69. For LMC X–1, we estimate an absorbing column density of ' 6 × 1021 cm−2, which is almost ten times larger than that found for LMC X–3. In both sources, we find no indication of emission or absorption features whatsoever.

A BeppoSAX view of transient black hole candidates in quiescence

We report on BeppoSAX observations of five transient black hole candidates during their quiescent phase. We confirm these sources are X–ray faint, improving on and complementing existing upper limits. We derive 1–10 keV upper limits for GRO J0422+32, GRS 1009–45, 4U 1630–47 and XTE J1748–288, which range from 2× 10 erg s to 5× 10 erg s. We positively detect GS 2023+338. Its X–ray spectrum can b...

Iron Line Diagnostics for the GRS 1915+105 Black Hole

Martocchia et al. (2002, Paper I [5]) and Martocchia et al. (2003, Paper II [6]) reported the discovery of intense iron Kα fluorescent emission in two BeppoSAX observations of themicroquasar GRS 1915+105, which took place respectively on April 19-20, 1998, and April 21-22, 2000. During these observations the Fe line is broad and asymmetric, best fitted with a relativistic disc model (see e.g. [...

The relativistic Fe emission line in XTE J1650–500 with BeppoSAX: evidence for black hole spin and light bending effects?

We report spectral results from three BeppoSAX observations of the black hole candidate XTE J1650–500 during its 2001/2002 outburst. We find strong evidence for the presence of a broad and strongly relativistic Fe emission line. The line profile indicates an accretion disc extending down to two gravitational radii suggesting the presence of a rapidly rotating central Kerr black hole. Thanks to ...

BeppoSAX observations of the Narrow - Line Seyfert 1 galaxy RX J 1702 . 5 + 3247

We report optical, radio and X-ray observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy RX J1702.5+3247. The soft (0.1-2 keV) X-ray flux, measured by BeppoSAX, is characterized by strong variability on short time scales (< 500 sec). The most extreme amplitude variations require a radiative efficiency exceeding the maximum for a Kerr black hole, implying the presence of relativistic effects. A compa...

High-Energy Spectra From Black-Hole Candidates

Our knowledge of the high-energy emission spectra from black-hole candidates has increased enormously with missions like BeppoSAX and RossiXTE, thanks to their broad-band window. I present the main and most solid points of this current knowledge, both in terms of detailed spectral modeling of X-ray broad-band spectra, and more generally in relation to the “black-hole state paradigm”, which link...
